Parkinson Volatility uses the high-low range instead of just close-to-close — typically 5–10× more efficient than HV because each bar contributes a real range number. - More stable than HV during low-print sessions. - Annualised (×√252) so it lives on the same scale as HV.
Historical Volatility annualises the rolling standard deviation of log returns — the classic vol number used by options traders and risk managers. - Read it as expected 1-year move if today's regime persists. - Useful for sizing stops and comparing implied vs realised vol.
Chaikin Volatility is the percent change of the smoothed high-low range — turns positive on a volatility expansion, negative on a contraction. - Crosses above zero = range is widening (trend regime opening). - Crosses below zero = range is narrowing (squeeze candidate).
Standard deviation of the source across the lookback — the raw dispersion that Bollinger and z-score studies are built on. - Higher value = wider distribution of recent prices (volatile regime). - Compare to its own moving average to detect volatility expansion vs contraction.
True Range is the per-bar range that accounts for the gap from the prior close — the raw input most volatility studies feed into. - TR bar range when there's a gap against the prior close. - Plot TR directly to see the day-to-day volatility burst, then smooth with ATR / Wilder for the average.
ATR smooths the True Range over len bars — the canonical volatility number used for stops, position sizing and ride-regime filters. - Rising ATR = expanding volatility (trend / news regime). - Falling ATR = contracting volatility (compression / chop).
Donchian Channel is the classic turtle-trader band: upper rail = highest high of the lookback, lower rail = lowest low. - Breakouts above/below the rails are the original trend entries. - A flat channel (rails pinned) = range regime; ride the rails back to the middle.
Keltner Channel uses an EMA of the typical price plus/minus an ATR envelope — smoother than Bollinger and a common trend filter. - Price above the upper rail = trend up; below the lower rail = trend down. - Channel width tracks ride regime; tight KC + BB squeeze = coiled spring.
Bollinger Bands plot a moving average plus/minus an envelope that scales with recent volatility (StdDev of the source). - Squeeze = bands pinch together → low volatility, expect a breakout. - Walk = price hugging the upper band → strong trend, lower band → strong downtrend. - Crosses of the outer band are common mean-reversion entry zones.
Vortex Oscillator plots +VI and -VI — sums of upward vs downward range moves normalised by true range. When +VI crosses -VI up, the trend is bullish; the opposite for bearish. - Crossover of the two VIs is the entry signal. - Raise Length for steadier trend calls. - Pair with an ADX filter to confirm trend strength.
Relative Vigor Index (RVI) compares the close-to-close move against the high-low range. Rises in trends because closes tend to print near the high; falls in downtrends. - Pair with the signal line (its SMA) for crossover signals. - Above 0 = bullish pressure, below 0 = bearish. - Raise Length for smoother readings.
RSI Smoothed runs an extra EMA over RSI so the line is steady but still preserves the original momentum signal. Fewer whipsaws in chop. - Above 70 = overbought, below 30 = oversold. - Raise the smoothing length for ultra-steady output. - Combine with raw RSI for early signals.
MACD Histogram alone — the gap between MACD and its signal line, plotted as columns. Bar colour flips are the momentum-shift alerts. - Positive columns = bullish momentum building. - Shrinking bars = momentum weakening. - Pair with MACD/Signal for full context.
Slow Stochastic smooths %K one extra time before plotting — cleaner and less noisy than fast Stoch. The default in most trading platforms. - Above 80 = overbought, below 20 = oversold. - %K crossing %D in extreme territory is the textbook trigger. - Raise smoothing for steadier signals.
RSI of MACD runs RSI over the MACD histogram so momentum extremes on the MACD become 0-100 RSI levels. Picks up MACD divergences cleanly. - Above 70 = MACD histogram overbought. - Below 30 = MACD histogram oversold. - Raise RSI Length for smoother output.
Chande Momentum Oscillator (CMO) is the difference between sum of ups and sum of downs over the lookback, scaled to ±100. A symmetric, range-bounded momentum oscillator. - Above +50 = overbought, below -50 = oversold. - Zero-line crosses flag momentum shifts. - Raise Length for fewer, steadier signals.
Efficiency Ratio is Kaufman's ratio of net price movement to total path. 100 = perfectly straight, 0 = pure noise. - Above 30 = trending, below 30 = chop. - Raise Length for steadier readings. - Filter all your other systems by it — only take signals when ER 30.
Bollinger Bandwidth is the width of the Bollinger Bands normalised by the middle band. The cleanest volatility indicator for squeeze detection. - Lowest 1% of readings = squeeze setups. - A re-expansion after a squeeze is the canonical breakout entry. - Pair with %B for direction-of-break confirmation.
Bollinger %B plots where price sits inside its Bollinger Bands, scaled 0-1. Above 1 = above upper band, below 0 = below lower band. - Reads 0-20% = stretched down, 80-100% = stretched up. - Crossover of 1.0 or 0.0 flags band breaks. - Pair with Bandwidth for squeeze detection.
Inverse Fisher RSI runs RSI through a hyperbolic-tan transform so its values cluster near ±1 instead of squashing inside 30-70. Far cleaner extremes than raw RSI. - Above +0.5 = overbought, below -0.5 = oversold. - Great filter for mean-reversion systems on choppy assets. - Raise Length for fewer, slower signals.
Fisher Transform stretches price into a near-Gaussian distribution then inverts the CDF so turns become sharp peaks. Excellent reversal oscillator. - Above +1.6 = overbought, below -1.6 = oversold. - Crossover of trigger (previous bar's value) flags momentum shifts. - Raise Length for steadier swings on noisy assets.
Bear Power is the difference between the period low and an EMA of the close. Negative = bears pushed price below the average close. - Pair with Bull Power for the full Elder Ray setup. - Bear Power falling while Bull Power rises = weakening downtrend. - Plot on the price pane alongside candles.

Disparity Index measures price distance from its SMA in percent. Above 0 = price above its MA, below 0 = price below. - Extreme readings flag short-term blowoffs vs the trend. - Use with an MA crossover to fade overextensions. - Raise Length for a steadier baseline.
